Jethro Tull Seattle Center Coliseum 1977

JETHRO TULL
Songs From The Coliseum [Uxbridge 372, 2CD]
Live at the Seattle Center Coliseum, Seattle, WA; March 3, 1977.
Very good to excellent audience mono recording.

MP3 224

*Original Notes*

This set was previously shared among fans as Came Down Out Of The Sky To Cry You A Song, missing the first six tracks on Disc One. A version of this complete show was shared on the net in May this year, which prompted a fan, luciferburns, to comment that Jethro Tull’s 1977 tour was the group’s “last hoorah as far as I’m concerned as I think Songs From The Wood was their last truly inspired album and tour.”
Put it this way, if you are a Jethro Tull fan, you will be hugely entertained and will not be disappointed, with Ian Anderson’s flute solo towards the end of Disc One a particular highlight. Perhaps there is simply something beguiling in the set’s (or the songs’) rusticity.

Thanks to Lincoln Park Mark for sharing the tracks.

This boot is unique, although it is very rare,
it’s uniqueness stems from the quality of the sound.
It is  far superior to any of the known LP bootlegs
or audience recordings in circulation.
Whoever recorded it somehow managed to plug
into the sound system. The sound quality is phenomenal.

Notes: A very good sound for this audience recording. Peter's "dirty" story introducing The musical box is very amusing (the audience seems to agree with this). Supper's ready features a seldom heard "full ending" instead of the usual fade out.<-(Info taken from original info file).

Comments:
There is some uncertainty with these 2 recordings (Nov. 1 and 2, 1972 in Boston.
This much I know: Jethro Tull did play both those nights at Boston Garden. I got
both of these in the early 1980's in trade, told they were recorded by a Boston area
taper at the Boston Garden. Both sound like they were recorded close up, not alot of
crowd noise. I did not label them as the 1st and 2nd, and thus do not know which is which.
There is some distinction between the shows. the phone call in what I think is the
Nov. 1st show is for Mike Nelson, in the 2nd it's for Lloyd Bridges. These are clearly
not duplicate recordings, or different recordings of the same concert, although both
were apparently recorded on the same equipment by the same taper and both came from the
same source at the same time. these are both incomplete recordings, but both include
full length, almost complete TAAB's, the beginning of both shows, and are missing the rest
from Cross Eyed Mary on. (probably close to half the show.)
I have seen the Boston Nov. 71 show circulating on dime, but neither of these. The
TAAB versions in both of these are the full monty versions. (NOT the readers digest
version for rockers with ADD.) this was the last tour I did not see of Jethro Tull,
and clearly one of their very greatest. I wouldn't be much of a tullnut, without some
bricks to lay out. These are my two contributions to the brick pyramid on dime, and
I think both of them are worth your time. The Nov. 2nd (I think) one has less of the
speed variation problem but it is noticable in parts of both (not all of either).
the brick was adventurously played in these shows, not much like the album version,
with some improvisations. track 4 is somewhere between hare and babies wearing nylons
(a mix of both). the Boston tullnut society was already solid for these shows, the
enthusiasm is obvious but not overbearing in the recording. if not for the speed problems
these would both be among the best sounding brick shows I've heard. everything comes
through quite well, including Ian's always interesting banter.
I believe the Nov. 1st recording has just 1 tape flip cut in the brick, only missing
a few seconds. The Nov. 2nd one is missing some news and weather, but none of the brick.
Do not sell this recording.

Trade freely and losslessly.
Not even Buckingham Palace
is built with bricks THIS thick!

This copy didn't have any artwork so I took the liberty of adding a little,
Enjoy.

*Original Notes*

April 24, 1970 — In early April, when Fleetwood Mac returned to London after an emotional
European tour, Peter Green, devastated by drugs, suddenly announced he would be leaving the
group in late May. Clifford Davis, the band’s manager, reluctantly began cancelling an
upcoming British tour set to begin the following month. Relationships in the stunned band
were strained, but the Mac still had to complete recording “The Green Manalishi
(With the Two-Prong Crown)”, Peter’s final studio effort with them, as well as a B-side for
the single. To underscore the troubled band relationships, Jeremy Spencer opted out of these
sessions to work on his own album.
Despite the high tension, the recording sessions at De Lane Lea Studios in London, driven
by the intense music, still had their moments. Mick set up his new gong, surrounded by six
microphones and miles of cables, in the underground car park below the studio. When Mick
banged his gong, that car park vibrated like a giant bell with an eerie ringing that
reverberated off the walls. Talk about an echo! Another night, Carlos Santana showed up,
and it didn’t take long for a lengthy jam session to start. In the past, Peter often hit
upon brilliant melodic ideas in the midst of jams like these, and on this night, he was
showing Santana some pretty impressive licks. At some point, Peter had introduced Santana to
“Black Magic Woman”, the hit that Carlos would record shortly thereafter for his own band’s
second album. Throughout the sessions, Clifford did his best to convince Peter to stay, but
Greenie steadfastly maintained his intention to leave, seemingly happier now that his
decision was public.

2. A Saucerful of Secrets (encore)  13:06

This is one of the must-have dates from the 1972 tour.
The band puts in great performances of their older, post-Syd and pre-DSotM classics.
In fact, I really don't recall any other 1972 dates when Eclipse was not performed. It seems
the band played a single set, with Saucerful of Secrets as the sole encore.Sadly, there is
a poorly edited cut towards the end of CWtAE. This is either due to a tape flip or was done
to fit the music on the album side.

Enjoy!!!!
