Reg Isodore: drums/ vocals(?)

Bonus Tracks and AlbumWrap included

Original Notes:

An excellent sounding FM broadcast of Trower after the release of
"Twice Removed From Yesterday" but before "Bridge Of Sighs" from
the Amazing Kornyphone Records label.

I bought this LP around 1975 and it instantly became my favorite
Trower record, as the wear and tear on the vinyl shows.

Included is a jpg scan of the cover art. My scanner bed isn't large
enough to accomodate an lp cover so I pasted two half-scans together.
The two parts don't line up exactly but it gives you an idea of what the
cover looks like.

The above recording history/ show date came from a trader's website
so I can't vouch for its accuracy but it seems logical to me.

Please trade this freely but do not sell.

It is with great pleasure to be finally sharing this with the Dime Community. If you're even remotely familiar with Sabbath Recordings you'll know that this is one of the Holy Grails. For those unaware, this recording, as far as I know, is the earliest live document of Black Sabbath. A simple thanks will suffice, however if you'd like to get in touch with me, I can be reached here on Dime.

I can only hope that by sharing this, it will inspire others who have any uncirculated recordings to share theirs with the community and let us as fans enjoy the music. This is dedicated to all those Dimers (Past and Present) who have shared their recordings over the years and especially to those who have shared uncirculated material (You know who you are!).
This is actually a very enjoyable recording and provides an example of the type of show the band known as Earth would have played and their transition into one of the most important bands in history, Black Sabbath!

Alex Wilson's Original Notes: The night of Sunday, 16th November 1969 at Rugman's Youth Club changed my life. I'd never heard a band play with such power or heavy riffs before, and it actually made me start my own band!

I'll start off by describing Rugman’s - it's like standing in a small section of railway tunnel. There were stages at both ends, possibly about 20 yards long with walls curving onto the ceiling. The stage Sabbath played on was about 2 foot high. There were no fancy stage lights, just one red bulb overhead and all the other room lights were out! There was about a crowd of 80 to 100 of an average age around 16 years, so there was no alcohol. It is worth noting that there was NO swearing from Ozzy, possibly because there were kids present and maybe his Dumfries girlfriend as well, a girl named Gillian McQueen.

The acoustics were quite good if there was a crowd in. The show was recorded at the far stage from where the Sabs played, using one Grundig dynamic mic (thus making the tape just monaural). There was no automatic level setting on the mike then, so there are fluctuations in the recording level, as well as the inevitable bits of tape dropout considering the age of the tape originally used. During the music solos, you can hear the crowd chatting and discussing the evening, due to the obvious fact that they were standing between the mike and the band.

The original tape was recorded on a Grundig reel to reel at 3 and 3/4 ips. I used to record every Amplified Heat show, so my equipment was there. Towards the end of the seventies, the tape began to fall apart. God knows when the original tape used was manufactured! But I did manage to transfer the recording to another reel to reel. Sabbath played 2 sets that night, but I was so gobsmacked that I didn't record the first set!

Sabbath's equipment set-up that night was as follows: Ozzy sang through a Vox 100 watt P.A. amplifier via 2 Vox columns with four 10" speakers in each of them! Geezer and Tony had a Laney stack each with two 4 x 12" speaker cabinets each, but amazingly their Laney amp heads were only 60 watts (one amp per stack)! Bill's kit consisted of 1 bass drum, one hanging tom, one floor tom, one snare, and a hi hat!!

The tape lasts approximately 62 minutes and the running order is as follows:

1. Black Sabbath: I managed to get the last minute and half of this song.

2. Let Me Love You Baby: This is a fast jazz-blues song that I'm sure Jeff Beck/Rod Stewart did on their first LP. It lasts just under 5 minutes, but sadly suffers from a bit of volume drop out for 20 seconds in the last minute of the song. Otherwise, it's brilliant. This was the end of their first set of the evening. Ozzy announces that they’ll have a half-hour break at this point in the show. [Editors note: This song is actually a Buddy Guy song that was later covered by many artists including the Jeff Beck Group and Stevie Ray Vaughan. The original tape loses volume towards the end of the song, but this has been fixed...]

3. "A Song For Jim" / Bill Ward's Drum Solo / "A Song For Jim" [reprise]: The second set starts off with a flute and drum solo section featuring Tony Iommi on flute! This segues into Bill Ward soloing with his tiny kit! This section lasts approx 11 minutes and has a jazzy flute part in the middle that sounds like something out of the Pink Panther! [Editor's note - Although Alex had originally listed this one as just a "Flute & Drum solo", it immediately occurred to me that Tony was actually playing the melody for "A Song For Jim"! Upon closer inspection, I realized that Geezer was playing as well, so this is actually a live version of the song so many collectors have been clawing for. While we've only heard a smidgen of the unreleased demo for this song on the BLACK SABBATH STORY - VOLUME 1 video, we get to hear quite a bit more here. This rarely heard song sandwiches a rather lengthy Bill Ward drum solo and a short flute interlude from Tony. The complete running time of this track is 11:01.]

4. The Warning: After a small break of 30 seconds the fourth track is "Warning", lasting 17 minutes and 45 seconds. There are slight bits of volume dips and tape dropout during this number, which is otherwise very good quality. [Editor's note - This rendition of "The Warning" contains a few extra sections that were likely cut from the studio version, making this a nice opportunity to hear what may have been extracted. You can tell the audience is getting rather restless by the 15 minute mark, so it was probably wise to edit this one for the album. There is a small cut towards the end of the song, but is probably missing only a minute or so.]

5. Wicked World: The next song is "Wicked World", lasting 5 minutes 30 seconds. This features a jazzy section between verses 1 and 2 that’s not on the single version. I don’t know if it's been on any other recordings or not. There's a severe jump in the volume during the instrumental section leading to the last verse. God knows what caused that! You can hear Bill counting in the ending...

6. Behind The Wall Of Sleep: Next up is "Behind The Wall Of Sleep" at just under 5 minutes. The last 70 seconds features a fast jazz blues section, which I don’t remember on the original release. [Editor's note – This includes the same jazzy section that can also be heard on Paris ’70, John Peel’s Sunday Show 4/26/70 and Koln 4/3/70. This leads me to believe that the band originally intended that section to be part of the song. The studio version ends just before they would ordinarily kick into the jazz vamp.]

7. "Early One Morning" [a.k.a.Early Morning School]: The seventh track is a fast blues/boogie, which I believe they called "Early Warning School". I don’t have the announcement on tape, but I seem to recall that was the title they said. But I'm going back 35 years here to remember this! It lasts just under 5 minutes. Very good. [Editor's note – Sorry for the previous confusion on the title. David Rostowsky pointed out that this is more than likely a cover of the Elmore James song "Early One Morning", with slightly butchered lyrics!]

8. N.I.B.: The eighth track is "NIB" at just over 5 minutes long. This is the one that changed my musical outlook and encouraged me to start my own band. [Editor's note - "N.I.B." has different lyrics!! The 'chorus' sections ("My love for you has got to be real") are the same, but the verses are completely different.]

9. Blue Blood Man: The last track and the encore for the night is called "Blue Blood Man". It’s a fast blues/boogie that showcases Tony doing his Alvin Lee impersonation (via Django Reinhardt!) This lasts over 6 minutes and is great!

I spoke to the band after the show when they were packing their gear into their old Transit. I asked Tony why he had left Jethro Tull after even being on Top Of The Pops. T.O.T.P. was the ultimate pinnacle in those days, for you knew you'd arrived if you got on it. He told me he'd "Rather play with my mates. Jethro Tull are weird!" I can also remember my flared trousers flapping in the wind from the volume of the show when I was standing in front of the stage! I met the band another 3 times in the very early 70's and they always remembered the times they played in Dumfries. I'm sure there are more Dumfries dates for your timeline, which I'll try and find out for you.

The Copenhagen 1974-12-04 show has certainly made the rounds - and with good reason as it is one of the better sounding Warchild shows available. But, here's one of my JT best kept secrets. Here is the second night of Copenhagen, I believe recorded by the same recorder from the night before AND, overall, this is better sound quality than the 1974-12-04. I have always preferred listening to this show over the 1974-12-04. But, there is one down side to the recording, there is a very painful cut at the end of Warchild that also swallows most of Sealion, but if you can get through that, this is really an awesome show that will certainly enhance your JT collection. Sample included.

*Original Notes
One of my favourites concerts. Nick's on fire on Careful, there's an arab
at the beginning of Fat Old Sun. An unforgettable Gilmour over ASoS.

I always liked this one over the other versions i have of this recording. This
comes from a 1st generation cassette obtained right from the taper by MB. This
is an unprocessed transfer from that tape. HRV release is really good too, i
like the bass on that one, so maybe some of you would not consider this an
upgrade, but i think this one has better ambience and high-end overall, and hiss
is really low. Also, this tape was originally copied in mono and Dolby B on.
Only missing about 1:30 minutes of tunings, all chats and announcements are
there.

This had an speed issue. It starts somewhat ok but fast, and it went faster and
faster as the tape ran. ASoS is incredible fast on the original transfer. So i
speed corrected it track by track, comparing to HRV's and another incomplete 1st
generation i have, and testing with my guitar for the right tune. You may find
maybe it still run fast at some portions, this is my first attempt in speed
correcting track by track so it's a 1st time work, but i think it came out
right. Anyway they didnt played with a click track on that days so their own
speed varied from concert to concert i have to guess. It's known to me that 1971
has an slower playing than late 1970 (not the case of AD though). And they went
slower with the years mostly.

I labeled this tape as source 3 cos it was the 3rd version i got of this
show, and it was different to the other 2. There's a 1st Generation which
i call source 1 which is incomplete (75m only) and it doesnt sound better than
this, but it seems it has the complete tunings. Then the HRV version is the
complete one and i called it source 2, but i suspect they patched some of the
tunings from other source (any hint on this?) and this src3 i offer here
has music complete but missing some tunes as i stated before.

Also note that the taper seemed to stop the recording after every song
finishes, this is edited on the HRV release by adding fade outs and more
clapping, i left here the cuts and fades as they were on the tape/transfer.

This set of FLAC files are in 24bit/48khz, you cant play this on a regular CD
player. You can only play this through your PC with a soundcard that supports
this output but even my old SBlive 5.1 can play this so you shouldnt had any
problems. I suppose you can burn this as DVD-Audio or something, but i dont
know about that stuff. Also, i recommend you to update your player and FLAC
codecs to its latest versions. A 44khz/CD & tracked burnable version is on the
way.

A big thanks to Moonwall for the great artwork.

Enjoy

A CDR source of this audience tape of the band's first 1971 concert.
Thank you to Anthony P from Brooklyn for making it available through me to the Yeeshkul community.
This recording comes from one reel and the vast majority of the recording is on another.
I was once indirectly offered a copy of a 2 hour version but discussions broke down.
At least two versions of the 25 minute version circulate on CD. Both contain the same songs but another one I have been offered is 9 seconds longer. The cassette sample I torrented in December 2012 (Source 1) sounds significantly better than this version but is, of course, much shorter.

The full tracklist that night was:

The Embryo,
Astronomy DominƩ,
Fat Old Sun,
Careful With That Axe, Eugene,
Cymbaline, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun,
A Saucerful Of Secrets,
Atom Heart Mother (with brass and choir).

It's likely that I should have reversed tracks 1 and 2 but I decided to torrent them in the order they are on Anthony's disc.

Last Word

My biggest regret is, I didn't wear my Motorhead t-shirt to a Guns n Roses concert. Mind you, I would NEVER! wear a Guns and Roses t-shirt to a Motorhead concert - fuck that! But Motorhead are dead now, and that makes me sad. Well, Lemmy's dead. Which makes Motorhead dead. Motorhead Dead, kinda like if Garcia hooked up with Lemmy. Nah, it would never work. I couldn't wear a Motorhead t-shirt at a Grateful Dead show, because the Dead are dead, and Guns and Roses still suck.

The Master has his Puppet

Hate to get political on my blog. Unbelievable decision tonight. I thought I lost faith in America after it relected Bush Jr. by 55%. I've always said 55% of Americans were morons. Sadly, I've been proven right. As Vladimir Putin revs up his tanks, I fear for Eastern Europe. With Trump in his pocket, a world war is now unavoidable.
The banjos are a' playing this evening, As this megalomanic takes control of the most powerful nation in the world, and the nuclear codes, the nation/world shakes in fear. Hard working, patriotic, loyal immigrants are running for their lives.
How could this visceral, transparent, lying, back peddling, two faced devil be remotely acceptable to any thinking being is beyond my comprehension. I have reached an understanding now, that the bumper sticker, sit-com, t-shirt slogan culture that made the US so enjoyable has now become their intellectual high bar. Reality TV, I truly believe, has become the true reality in the eyes of most Americans. Global affairs, understanding of lesser developed nations, politcal complications of a multitude of nations, the effects of the western industry and commerce on poorer economies. How can anybody look to a cheating, delusional, billionaire, with little to no contact or care (beyond personal servitude) to the working class as their champion. Beguiled, tricked and fooled. I wish I could just say to America - good luck. But tragically, it's a global problem now.

** Original Beechwoods' Notes

Marbal recorded both of the Floyd's performances at the Festhalle in Frankfurt in November 1972, on the 16th and 17th. The first show was recorded to cassette, on a mono Philips EL3302 portable recorder. On the 16th Marbal spotted that the venue had conveniently sited mains power upstairs besides the seats, so he decided to try and get his Grundig TK147 reel to reel recorder into the venue for the second night.

This transfer is named in honour of that machine, and the nerve it took to get it into the venue! It's easy to forget how big decent machines were back in the early 70's, and the difficulty in getting them into a venue. As Marbal commented on the day before 'When we ran inside the hall we kicked the security out of the way...' - a 'take no prisoners' approach to stealth recording!

It's worth saying a little about existing copies that circulate. All Marbal's cassette copies are from his 1st Gen backup reel. 'I did that during my student time to secure the quality of the 1st reel which was in my parents' house together with the machine while I had 2 cass-decks in my little flat'. Circulating cassette copies will be 2nd gen or higher.

The mastertape is sadly damaged and lost.

This particular transfer is, I hope you will agree, an extraordinary improvement on circulating copies.

** Jimfisheye's Notes

This is a mono recording of a concert presented in quadraphonic surround sound. The balance captured on tape is fairly complete considering but certain elements are far away sounding due to the mono perspective.

The recording suffers from incorrect transfer speeds, high frequency attenuation from tape degradation and generation loss and harmonic distortion from a microphone/deck just not up to the task of capturing full spectrum live loud dynamic sound. The loudest sections of music suffer further high and high mid frequency attenuation and compression.

The intent for this master is to present the concert as closely as possible to how it originally sounded with a reasonable amount of restoration work. Listening to a raw audience recording of an event made on amateur and/or portable equipment can turn into more of a study of the challenges and imperfections than the event itself. Tapes running at wrong speeds, volume levels altered by equipment response and operator controls and frequency balance altered by equipment limitations can be very large distractions. Perfectly complete restoration is not always the goal (or even always possible). There will almost certainly be some artifact left untouched or a technique employed to be scrutinised. The goals here were to restore the correct speed, offset the high frequency attenuation and correct record level fluctuations caused by level adjustments during the recording and other equipment anomalies.

The 1st half of TDSOTM is 46c flat but the rest of the show is 31c flat. This was corrected with Serato Pitch n Time. The level of harmonic distortion makes it difficult to make any adjustments without further degrading the recording. I was able to restore some balance by boosting the high frequencies. The high mids were boosted and the highs further boosted during the more compromised loud sections. All eq boosts were done by first isolating the frequency range to boost in a copy of the track and then mixing this together with the original track. This clinical approach avoids the colouration and alterations inherent in eq boosts. I used iZotope2 noise removal on the track adding back in high frequency content in order to not increase the hiss in the recording. It was not possible to remove hiss from the overall recording without losing content. I corrected the record level fluctuations and removed a number of noises from the mic and equipment being physically jostled.

Speed correction and certain isolated noise/artifact removal is fairly black and white. Acoustics of the venue, performance of the sound engineer and the nature of the quadraphonic surround sound mixing present a lot of variables. Add portable recording equipment to this (and these levels moving around especially at the beginning of the show) and frequency balance and level correction become more subjective. Although this recording is far from audiophile or even portable consumer standards, the fragile nature of its remains actually require a full quality digital format to preserve without incurring further loss. With this in mind and to preserve raw data for future technology, the raw digital transfer and a speed corrected only version are included with the mastered version of this recording.

This show gets off to a rough start as well. Rick's keys are flat at first. (Power issues affecting Ricks tuning?) They seem painfully aware they are out of tune and are just trying to get through it. You can hear it in their playing. Sounds like everything's under control again by the end of Time.

Unknown Gen Cassettes

Here's another gem from the scratch and dent section. Pink Floyd in Tempe AZ is most definately a collector or completionist only recording. The sound is ragged and the tape player is doing somersaults. Nevertheless, it still has some value. The original notes are below.

1 x TDK SA90 Cassette, recorded sometime in the 90's.

*Original Notes
From my own unknown gen tape. A picture is included in this package.

This recording is pretty ropy. Unlike the circulating 'Tempe' transfer though, my tape actually sounds like the band are playing in the same room, rather than sounding like the taper was stood in the carpark! The taper's equipment struggles badly with the volume of the show. The audience are absolutely mental! Listen to the start of 'Breathe'! It must have been an incredible show.

This transfer betters the Tempe release in a number of ways. It is more complete in terms of announcements and audience prior to 'Raving And Drooling' - almost a minute more content here. 'Speak To Me' is also more complete; one and a half minutes longer prior to the point 'Tempe' kicks in to the track.

My tape ends with 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' which cuts after about 6 minutes. The sound of 'Shine On' is different to that of the rest of the show. The audience are definitely from the US, and quite intrusive, but the sound is wider, and clearer. Given 'Shine On parts 1-5' would have been performed between 'You've Got To Be Crazy' and Dark Side, I'd expect the sound to be consistent with those parts. And changing batteries would have seen a sustained improvement in sound through and into Dark Side, which is not apparent here.

I've not been able to identify the source of Shine On, but it shouldn't be too difficult given the constant mic-bumping and distinctive audience chatter.

Anyway, this is a very worthy upgrade to 'Tempe'. I hope you enjoy it.

*Original Notes
I received my cassettes in a trade with an experienced French collector in 1996 and they are probably low gen.

The files represent a straightforward transfer of this mono recording followed by a partial speed correction. I dropped the dull sounding right channel on sides A to C and the left channel on side D. As often occurs, taking this action gave the recording a nice boost. In terms of output levels, sides A and B were a good match for one another. I moved the FSP's gain dial down slightly for side C, then a little more for side D.

When transferring the tapes it was interesting to note that each side was close to 30 minutes:

A - SOYCD / R&D - ends 29.49.29
B - Echoes - ends 54.41.85
C - Speak To Me to Money - ends 84.39.27
D - Us And Them to One Of These Days - ends 112.55.61

My tapes run fast and unfortunately the speed is variable, ranging from 3% to 8% (the latter during parts of Time). I slowed the recording down by 3% in Audacity for this release so it is closer to being correct. After downsampling in Reaper from 24/96 to 16/44, the final step was to track the project in CDWave.

It's been said that this may be the definitive version of this show. Please weigh in with your comments!

This great set is here in a version that can directly be burned to CDr. A suggested split is to put the DSOTM material on one disk, and the remainder on the second.

Many thanks to Sgt. Weatherman for the professional artwork!
