*** Beechwoods' Transfer Notes ***

This is the second in our Beechwoods / LPP series of Marbal tape transfers. Germersheim 1972 being the first. Marbal recorded his first Floyd show in February 1971, onto cassette. He no longer has the master cassette, but he made backups to both cassette and ¼" reel to reel sometime around 1981, and this is from his reel to reel copy of the show.

Versus the cassette, the reel sounded more open and so it was this that we decided to use as the source of this transfer.

Marbal was fastidious in the way he labeled his tapes. This one was numbered 'Reel 29' or in German 'Band 29'. We liked the sound of that, and so have adopted it as the name of this release.

In total I did 5 transfers of this tape. When working with old tapes I find it useful to try the tape on different machines and to work out the best source by ear.  After reviewing, the first 3 transfers were discarded. Transfer 4 sounded great, but there were occasional spots of bleed-through where the signal from the adjacent track was audible, and so a fifth transfer was done using the reverse play heads on the RT707. Evidently the alignment of these heads were slightly different to the forward-play heads, so the bleed-through was mostly gone but the transfer wasn't quite as open as the 4th transfer. Ultimately we compiled the best product by using the 5th transfer to patch the relevant bleed-through segments on the slightly better Transfer 4.

Marbal's reel was a mono transfer, recorded on one of 4 tracks laid down onto his ¼" tape. Old tape-heads will remember the way tape-decks would allow you to selectively record just one mono, or two stereo tracks to a side of tape in a single pass. Recording 4 mono tracks meant your tape went twice as far. So even mono recordings can experience bleed through!

Little Pieces worked with these raw transfers.

*** Littlepieces' Mastering Notes ***

This high resolution transfer is from the same 1st gen reel that Marbal torrented on Yeeshkul several years ago.  As Beechwood indicated the final solution was to use the original Pioneer RT707 transfer and patch the extended segments of bleed over with the reverse playback transfer.  I maximized the use of the superior Pioneer transfer by manually spectral cleaning segments of bleed over when possible.  Generally, when the bleed-through segments were too long and/or continuous for spectral cleaning, then the segment was patched with transfer 5. The process was a pain in the ass but it was the only way to retain and use the most of the superior transfer.

I would describe this recording as having three sections of different fidelity.  The first section is to near the end of Embryo about 33m into the recording.  It starts with the beginning of AD having some fluctuating levels and not quite as strong SQ as the rest of the section.  After AD stabilizes, this 1st section from about 3-4m to 33m has the best SQ in this recording.  The 2nd section begins near the end of Embryo ~33m and ends near the middle of AHM.  This section begins with a subtle falling off of the upper half which eventually becomes easily apparent.  The third section begins near the middle of AHM when the upper half falls off more and some lower frequencies, sub 200Hz, begin to be over-driven periodically.

Marbal's wishes were to improve this recording including the use of EQ to achieve results.  As usual the objective was to lift the fidelity of the recording while maintaining a natural sound quality.

As indicated the 1st section started with AD having level differences and some drop outs. The levels were smoothed and the dropouts repaired or improved and it's upper half was EQ'd variably in order to make it more consistent with the rest of the recording.  The levels of a big drop out at ~4:47m of AD were brought up significantly and smoothed in order to diminish its prominence.  The remainder of this 1st section to ~33m had some modest selective increases to the upper end.

The second section, which ends during the first half of AHM, required more and more increase to the upper half as it continued to fall off. The recording accepted this EQ very well and mostly obscured the differences between the first section and this second section.

The third section begins during the first half of AHM and required more increase to the upper half but it reached a point where further increases were no longer appropriate.  In addition this section had some of its sub 200Hz levels selectively reduced to help moderate the over-driven parts that began in this third section.  This also improved the mix somewhat since the upper half could not be increased any further without adversely effecting the recording.

Apparent throughout most of the recording particularly during quieter segments is a hum at various levels around 100Hz.  This was selectively reduced throughout the recording and is no longer prominent.

Throughout the recording minor dropouts were repaired or improved and the gain increased on some segments as well as noise disturbances removed manually.

On all tracks, I rolled off some hiss varying my approach according to the level and characteristics of the segment while being careful not to encroach on the harmonics.

Finally, I adjusted the speed as it was fast throughout the recording.

A couple of notes:

- There is 84s more audience between AHM and AHM reprise than the previous master torrent.
- Sounds like inside cut at 8:17m of STC.
- Interesting artifact that becomes apparent after the fall off of the upper half begins. A deficit or clearing is often visible on the Spectrograph or Spectral between 3-4k.  An example is during the footstep sequence on Cymbaline.
- Pretty Naked Women are good.

*** Marbal's Recollections ***

It was also a very cold day. The Stadthalle is a small venue, not comparable with the Jahrhunderthalle in Frankfurt.  The little hall was very overheated due to outside weather conditions & in the beginning you can hear the crowd: "Heizung aus!, Heizung aus!" which means: "Heating off!".  Then at the beginning another comment from a friend of mine: "Hey seid mal ein bißchen leise" which means "Please keep a little more quiet" to the people around us showing to our recorder which was respected then most of the time.

After a few songs there was a little talking again about the comparison to Deep Purple which we've seen there before: "Deep Purple ist nichts dagegen - nichts dagegen? - Deep Purple ist SCHEISS dagegen!" which translates like this: "Deep Purple is nothing against this - nothing against this? - Deep Purple is SHIT against this!"

And so it was. Pink Floyd blew us away in a style which was incredible & for me only comparable with the Nektar show from 11.11.70.

It was an incredible sound & light in concert....

*** Note ***

Readers should not forget that ZDF arts show Aspekte recorded segments of the Offenbach show for broadcast on the 3rd March 1971, and that this footage was shared with collectors on the 'A Hamburg Moment' DVD, in stunning quality. Many thanks go to Marek and Pict who made that footage available. Stills from that DVD have been used to create the artwork for this release. Thank you.

RE-UP Pink Floyd - Roland Petit Rock Ballet 1972

Roland Petit Rock Ballet
Performed to the music of Pink Floyd

Performed Live November 22-26, 1972
Broadcast on French TV January 12-13, 1973

Lineage: TV > cass > eac > flac

Setlist is as follows:

1.) One Of These Days
2.) Careful With That Axe, Eugene (fades out after scream)
3.) Obscured By Clouds
4.) When You're In
5.) Echoes

Important note. This is not Pink Floyd playing live. The songs are the original album cuts linked together with "Pillow of Winds" wind effect.

Here's more info about the man behind the ballet company that joined forces with the Floyds to produce this unusual rock ballet performance:

Petit, Roland, 1924–, French dancer and choreographer, b. Villemoble. Petit joined the Paris Opéra company at 15and in 1948 founded Les Ballets de Paris de Roland Petit.

His best-known work, Carmen (1949), set to music from Georges Bizet's opera, was created for his company, with Renée (Zizi) Jeanmaire, who later (1954) became his wife, in the title role. Other well-known early works include Le Jeune homme et la mort (1946) and Ballabile (1950). Petit later turned to less classical forms, such as choreographing films, e.g., Hans Christian Andersen (1952) and Daddy Long Legs (1955) and music hall revues (1956–61). He returned to ballet in the 1960s when commissioned to present the Festivals populaires de ballet at the Chaillot theater in France.

In 1972 he founded the Ballet de Marseilles, which he directed until 1997. Among his later dances are Symphonie Fantastique (1975), The Blue Angel (1985) and Clavigo (1999). Petit's chic and theatrical style have made him an extremely popular figure in French dance

BRILLIANT!!!! On the Run is completly different, and The Great Gig is also different (the begining of TGGiTS seems like the end of SOS, when R.Wright plays beautiful chords on the organ, then there is something said, and then it's like the early years, like Interstelar Overdrive ).

D.G. and R.Wright sing at the same time in 'Time', but the melody they sing is different from the one on DSoTM. Also, R.Wright instead of saying "Tired of lying in the sunshine..." says something like "Lying supine in the sunshine..."

The initial effects of 'Money' are different.

'Brain Damage' is not complete: they don't sing the second part from "The lunatic is in my head..." to "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."

This is great, excellent recording. Some audience talking in quiet bits -- my Japanese isn't good enough to hear what is being said. A few problems with timing when two or more vocal lines at the same time, but nothing too annoying. Love the guitar jam version of On The Run. Very atmospheric version of CWtA,E. Excellent, recommended.

*Original Notes
Lynyrd Skynyrd-Skynyrd's Fýrst (The Complete Muscle Shoals Album)(1971)

This may be the greatest unissued first album ever to surface from a major band. The story behind the 78 minutes of music on this CD, cut two years before Lynyrd Skynyrd's official debut album, could fill a chapter of a book. Cut primarily during late June and late July of 1971, with a quintet of 1972-vintage tracks added, they constitute Skynyrd's complete studio recordings from the period when they were still trying to get signed and were playing lots of small-time local gigs for barely enough money to live on. Seven of the songs were released on the 1978 album Skynyrd's First and...Last, and three others appear on the 1991 box set, while "Comin' Home" turned up on The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd earlier that same year, but this is the first time this potent body of work has been assembled properly, in one place. And, additionally, one previously unissued track by itself justifies the price of this disc -- the original demo version of "Free Bird," on which the soaring harmonies, Billy Powell's beautiful piano, and the Collins-Rossington guitar duo plays with startling fire and lyricism. Several of the tracks do contain overdubs laid on in the mid-'70s (mostly Ed King's bass and some guitar, and even a Mellotron on "White Dove" -- it would be great to hear that song without the electronic string section), but this is still the band at its most raw and unaffected, in terms of what the core members are playing. Ronnie Van Zant's singing was not only powerful, but beautiful at this stage of his career, and the group's playing -- especially the Rossington-Collins double lead guitar attack -- is filled with a fresh spirit of experimentation and adventure that makes these tracks essential listening for anyone who has ever enjoyed this band's work. Evidently, the material and related demos scared the crap out of most record company executives when they were shown around in 1971-1972, and it's easy to see why -- the sound is fierce, the songs not only boldly played but boldly written as well (even the Rick Medlocke-written
and sung "The Seasons" is a killer piece of semi-acoustic country-rock), and running anywhere from five to ten minutes apiece. Anyway, most record company executives being inherent cowardly, or stupid, or both, it's easy to see them running from the room over these sounds. Anyone who owns any of Lynyrd Skynyrd's releases should add this magnificent lost chapter in the group's history.

This source appeared in April, 2004. It is apparently the same recorder as that used by HRV-04 for the Eclipse release, although most likely from a different transcription of the analogue tapes. However, this recording contains Set The Controls that was absent from the recorder used for the Harvested release.

It is a far superior recording to the "second" recorder used for other RoIOs from this date (Dark Side Of Chicago, Chicago Auditorium), and which was used to provide the Set The Controls for HRV-04.

Fairport Convention - A Chronicle Of Sorts 1967-1969

Fairport Convention Chronicle - Original Notes
A major find for Fairport fanatics, this collects 23 unreleased performances from the late ’60s in acceptable-to-excellent fidelity, mostly from the BBC (with a few tracks from TV clips, and one 1968 studio outtake). Running 77 minutes, it’s divided roughly equally between the Judy Dyble and the Sandy Denny eras. Only one of these songs (“Reno, Nevada”) shows up on the official comp of early Fairport BBC cuts, Heyday. And even then, this is a much different version than the Heyday take of “Reno, Nevada,” running seven minutes and featuring some dazzling psychedelic guitar riffs. Otherwise, there’s a wealth of material that’s not officially available in either live or studio versions, including covers of several early Joni Mitchell songs, Bob Dylan’s “Dear Landlord,” Tim Buckley’s “Morning Glory,” Eric Anderson’s “Violets of Dawn,” and a send-up of “Light My Fire.” Plus, it has good live run-throughs of songs from their early albums like “Chelsea Morning,” “Fotheringay,” “Autopsy,” “Si Tu Doi Partis,” and others. It’s just as effective as Heyday in demonstrating the band’s interpretive skills and eclecticism in their early folk-rock days, though the sound quality isn’t as stellar.
Tracks 1-4 recorded by the BBC on 24 November 1967 and broadcast in ” Top Gear” on 10 December 1967 (This was the band’s first appearance on Radio)
Tracks 5-7 recorded by the BBC on 6 February 1968 and broadcast in ” Top Gear” on 3 March 1968

very nice.
I love the shows from this tour.

THE SONGS

You know, these complete Bricks are just incredible.
It's really a shame that no Soundboard recordings exist of any live performance of the 70+ minute long Thick as a Brick.
John's organ solos are fantastic.
The little bits of compositions in the "improv" sections are neat.
The whole danged thing is just mind-blowing.
If you don't have any of the long Brick that they performed from March 1972 - May 1973 get some.
You won't be disappointed.
This one is really good, but the sound quality ain't that hot.
I prefer higher quality sound and later in the tour, after June 1972, though the really early ones are interesting too.

01 Thick as a Brick Pt. 1 76:18
- - - includes Organ and Flute Solo
- - - Quartet
- - - God Rest Ye Merry Gents
- - - News and Weather (CUT - only a very brief fragment is present - in English)
02 Cross-Eyed Mary and Left Right and Audition 9:53
03 Aqualung 7:28
04 Wind Up and No Rehearsal and Guitar Solo 24:54
05 Locomotive Breath 9:37
16 Wind Up 2:44

TOTAL TIME 2 hours, 11 minutes

--------------------------
THE SOUND: not bad at all
MUCH BETTER and MORE COMPLETE
than my previously seeded version

--------------------------
THE PERFORMANCE:

Another GREAT performance.
The folks in Germany were treated to many special Tull shows.
The band was always a little better, took more risks, in Germany I think.
So was Frank Zappa.

*Original Notes
Sound Quality- I like it it sounds good- (Please see disclaimer)
I'll up samples. It is poorly edited with several songs to a track
mostly small instrumentals tacked on.

I really enjoyed this tour,it was very exciting. Ian entered the
stage and ran over jumped up grabbing a rope. As he pulled
the stage became a ship! Still the big 70's touring band of
Tull

The Band- I believe this is correct- I know Glasscock missed
shows as he was not always well
Ian Anderson
Martin Barre
John Evan
Barrymore Barlow
David Palmer
John Glasscock
