Pink Floyd - The Dome, Brighton 1972

Here's a favourite of mine. Pink Floyd's first ever performance of Dark Side...well almost.
January 20 1972 The Brighton Dome, Brighton.
Pink Floyd launched their latest work more than a full year before it's album release, The Dark Side Of The Moon. Although the premier didn't come off as planned, it didn't slow down the power and energy of Floyd and captures them in full flight.
"Severe mechanical and electrical horrors” collapsed the second half of Dark Side, starting with "Money", hastily redirecting  Floyd into performing Atom Heart Mother as a substitute for the second half of Dark Side. This show is quite possibly the last live performance of Atom Heart Mother.
Personally, my favourite track in this show is the screaming hot version of Saucerful Of Secrets. I love Saucerful, and knowing this was not performed much in and beyond 1972, this is a gem. Gilmour is off the hook.

Original Lineage: A(0)->HiFi VHS->DAT(2)->SHN
New Lineage: A(0)->HiFi VHS->DAT(2)->SHN-->Wav->ACL11->Wav->Flac7

Considered best source for this date. This source ran slow and had an occasional tick/crackle that apparently is not unusual for HI-FI VHS sources. Also, when Breathe first kicked in the taper was re-adjusting his levels which was a bit disruptive.

Speed corrected -3.0%, removed most of the occasional ticks/crackles, smoothed levels of first 12 seconds of Breathe. Applied very slight EQ, very slight NR and smoothed a few tape starts since taper was stopping between some tracks. Also ended Set1 after AHM since this is where they took their break.

I rarely use NR and I am not adverse to typical low gen analogue hiss since I grew up with it. I made an exception here after getting a good hiss sample and conservatively applying it. The spectrograph showed little music beyond 10k and I left more than 2k of buffer above the music. The result is perhaps a 30% reduction in hiss.

Many many thanks to the taper and Mesquite for sharing this gem from his fantastic collection. Recording seems a little boomy, turn down the bass & turn up the treble during playback. Can never get bored of CWTAE (a psychedelic masterpiece) and Echoes. Nice jam during OTR & ACYL.

This cd came to me with 11 tracks with some repeats between cds. I used cdwave & Cool Edit pro (CEP) to split tracks and remove any repeats. No other processing was done.

Original Notes:
This is another new Highland release I just received. According to http://pinkroioshn.myftp.org/ it sounds crispier than 'German Tour Vol. 3'. The ending of 'Brain Damage' and the beginning of 'Eclipse' are cut. Because this happens just around the 45 minute mark, I guess it is a tape flip.
There have been sector boundary errors between tracks 1 and 2 on disc 1 and all tracks on disc 2. I have fixed them with EAC's integrated wave editor.

Recorded Live at The Auditorium Chicago, IL 1972-04-28

Original Comments:

There are two tape sources in circulation for Pink Floyd’s Chicago show in 1972. The first tape was utilised by Highland on The Great Gig (Highland HL561/562) released several years ago. The sound quality is fair to good and is acceptable in lieu of anything else. But the second tape source surfaced in April 2004 and is used by Siréne on this release is a phenomenal upgrade. This was recorded on a reel-to-reel very close to the stage and picks up the concert in astonishing detail.  The only negative about this recording is the loud bass being a bit too high in the mix. It never overpowers the other instruments and one can make the claim this is the best recorded show from the 1972 spring tour. There is a cut after “Money” and at 1:22 in “Us & Them”, between each of the tracks during the second half and a cut and fade between 19:15 to 19:18 in “Echoes”.

The first transfers of this tape were missing “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”, but the final song of the show is present from the newer tape source and is complete on this release. The first half of the show is devoted to the material from Eclipse which wouldn’t be familiar with the audience for another year when it would be released on Dark Side Of The Moon. The tape begins right at the opening heartbeats and the audience cheers along with the synthesizer effects before the band crash into “Breathe”, sounding very close to the final version. The following “Travel Section” is the Wright/Gilmour jam section they would play all year.  Some collectors argue that this fits the atmosphere of the suite much better than ”On The Run”.  The jam session is a lot of fun to listen to, but the organised chaos of the VCS3 in an innovative classic that expresses more movement than conventional instruments are able to. “Time” is missing the giant buzzing clocks and Wright’s singing on the “lying supine in the sunshine” interludes are very clear.

The tape of Malcom Muggeridge is very loud during ”The Mortality Sequence” while Wright plays chord progressions similar to “Celestial Voices” from “A Saucerful Of Secrets”. The coin sounds are different at the beginning of “Money” and the band have a hard time synching up with it properly. They make an attempt, but eventually just turn the sound effects off. Gilmour sings the melody line similar to how Waters sings it on the acoustic demo (”Get a good job with more pay and you’re okay” in particular). Wright plays a keyboard solo in place of the saxophone in later versions. “Us & Them” is particularly slow and majestic in this recording and the band follow with the finale of the suite. “Any Colour You Like” (or “Scat” as it was called at this time) is a six minute Gilmour driven piece.

During “Eclipse” someone banging on a wooden block is audible in the mix and there is audience applause after the line “rearrange me ’till I’m sane”.  Overall it is an effective if slightly tired performance of the piece by the band. The second half of the show features two songs from their latest album Meddle and two older numbers. The first song is one of the heavier versions of ”One Of These Days” on tape. This one almost brings down the roof. “Echoes” is the second Meddle song played and received the loudest ovation of the evening. During the seabirds section someone keep shouting out “Pink Floyd … Pink Floyd” for some strange reason.  Before the encore Waters says: ”…come next time. Thank you all for coming” before introducing “Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun”.  Thirteen minutes of pure psychedelic explorations close the evening. Chicago 1972 is a great release on the Siréne label and one of their best overall.

Superb DSOTM from Low-Gen Reel to Reel 16 bit

Original Notes:
This is perhaps the nicest early performance this guy has ever had the pleasure to hear. As I think this tops both the Hollywood Bowl and Rainbow concerts from the same year, why do I say that? This show is so good it makes you float. The boys are relaxed and into it - I mean *really* into it, and it shows from beginning to end. The recording is also almost as good as it gets for an audience tape.

Many thanks to Doinker for uploading this marvellous 'Dark Side' performance.
It is a huge sonic improvement on the original Harvested release (RevA includes the entire concert),

In listening I thought there were a few things in the recording I wanted to adjust for myself, including:

i) A stereo image consistently off to the left, which I found distracting, especially on headphones.

It probably reflects the positioning of the taper within the hall. I reckon he was seated to the left side, close to the stage. Thus he would naturally have swivelled slightly right to face the stage. When he did, he'd have the audience around him and in front, but more weighted to the right. He'd also have the closest main speaker stacks above his left side and the Floyd's surround-sound stacks behind and to the right. I think he aimed his stereo mic towards the visual focus, the stage, and thus captured the left-dominant stereo field we hear on this recording.
Changing this is an aesthetic matter. The taper's positioning was not ideal, and no adjustment will make it so. However by simply shifting the phase alignment of the channels, I have duplicated what this recording would have sounded like if the taper had pointed his mic at the acoustic focus, the primary speaker stacks, and captured the music stereo centre. It does shift the audience a bit off to the right, and some of the multi-channel speakers too, but for me, this actually brings out the 'surround' feel of the tape effects a little better. You can certainly discern the tape effects from what comes from the musicians play on stage (eg: Speak To Me).
Note also at the end of 'Money', when (I'm guessing) it sounds as though the front PA dies, leaving audio coming from the stage itself and the surround stacks.

ii) Balancing the equalisation to lift the lower frequencies, adding 'body' to the sound and a bit more punch in the bass.

iii) Repairing numerous small dropouts and some larger glitches. No critique of Doinker, who may have corrected even worse problems (and said 'hopefully all done'), but there were quite a few in 'Breathe' and from 'Brain Damage' on, including some bad clunks in 'Eclipse'.

There were a few comments on Doinker's torrent suggesting these improvements would be appreciated, so having prepared this remaster for myself, I thought I would offer up the results for others. Here it is now, with Doinker's approval.

***Neonknight's Notes***
An enjoyable early DSOTM concert from the usual recorder but using a new source to the general community. "Oh God" exclaims a member of the audience as CWTAE commences. As one who never tires of listening to that particular song I can entirely see what he means!

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes***
This is a mono recording that was processed as two channel stereo. It has a phase shift that varies some but is generally about 2-5 samples. Both channels were retained and manually aligned to improve the phasing.

I improved the damaged segment near the beginning of Breathe by using the best part of each channel and repaired a dropout near the end of the song. Smoothed the fade out/fade in of The Mortality Sequence to Money and repaired a dropout in Money. Removed 13s repeated segment at beginning of U&T and spliced. Repaired noise at track change to BD and smoothed probable tape change and level drop during BD by using the best part of each channel.

I removed dead air from fade out/fade in near beginning of OoTD that is on all versions. Increased the gain of left channel on CWTAE 1.5db. Replaced the left channel with the right channel on Echoes as the left was 3.5-4db lower and of lower quality. About 5s into Echoes, you can hear the SQ change and signal drop after 6k - this seems to be on all versions. Removed dead air from fade out/fade in at ~15:22m into Echoes. I noted that before Echoes cuts that it has about 15s more content than the R&D source. I increased the gain of left channel 1.5-2.1db on SoS.

The speed of the first set was close enough most of the time and so I decided not to subject it to a SpC/resample. The second set was off a bit more and adjustments from 98.25 to 101.30 were made.

Pink Floyd

If you had to limit yourself to one Pink Floyd show from 1972, you certainly wouldn't choose this one. In fact, it wouldn't be in your top ten. Still, it's a nice show.

The setlist is unremarkable save for the rarely played (in '72) "A Saucerful Of Secrets." It's an overall good performance including a great "Travel Sequence" and "Any Colour You Like", and the bonus of a edit-shortened "The Mortality Sequence". (Other edits to beware of are a fade out - fade in near the beginning of OOtD and an Echoes cut short.) Sound quality is VG-, listenable with some low end distortion.

Track List

Disc One
01 Speak To Me - Breathe
02 The Travel Sequence
03 Time
04 Breathe Reprise
05 The Mortality Sequence
06 Money
07 Us And Them
08 Any Colour You Like
09 Brain Damage
10 Eclipse

Disc Two
01  One Of These Days
02  Careful With That Axe, Eugene
03  Echoes
03a Echoes
04  A Saucerful Of Secrets

Revisions made 08-03-03 by kingjollytrouser:

1.  Edited out gap in One of These Days at 1:28
2.  Fixed digital noise at 1:58 in Time
3.  Edited Echoes at 16:03 to remove fade out/in and gave track a smoother fade out.
I have included both versions of Echoes in case you don't like my edit.
4.  Smoothed out rough edit at 3:40 in Brain Damage and matched end levels to rest of song.
5.  Fixed several songs that had a small portion of their beginning at the end of the previous song.
6.  Removed a few pops/clicks.
7.  Named the ROIO since it didn't seem to have a name!

Pink Floyd - Berlin (Three Different Ones) 1972

The Great Gig In The Sky, Money, Us & Them, Any Colour You Like,
Brain Damage, Eclipse

Disc 2:  One Of These Days, Careful With That Axe Eugene, Echoes,
Set The Controls To The Heart Of The Sun

CMR:
Pink Floyd's show in Berlin on May 18th is the first of three appearances in a very short tour of Europe. The two following this, the May 21st gig in Germersheim and the May 22nd show in Amsterdam, have already been released by Sirene as Double Bubble (Sirene-008) and Amsterdam Rock Circus (Sirene-062). (A fourth show at the Bièvres Festival in Bièvres, France on June 25th is sometimes said to have taken place but no definitive evidence has surfaced).  Berlin 1972 is a mix of two audience sources. The first audience source is fair and has circulated on cdr as Lords Of The Universe and German Tour 1972 Vol. 1.  The second tape surfaced several years ago and is good to very good and clear. It is slightly hissy in quiet passages and contains several cuts.

Sirene use the better source for the majority of this release and edit the first tape source to fill the fifteen second gap for the tape flip in "Us & Them" at 2:45, the first five minutes of "One Of These Days" and a four minute gap beginning at 6:28 in "Echoes".  There are also several dropouts during "Echoes" and "Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun" but nothing major.  This is the only show of the three where the band played the Dark Side suite. It was dropped from the other dates since they were festivals. Gilmour sings in a strange voice for "Breathe". At first I didn't know if it was him or not but he sounds as if he has a cold. "The Great Gig In The Sky" ends with a heavenly melody on the church organ that segues into the opening for "Money".  "One Of These Days" is their best stage number and is overwhelming in this performance. This isn't the greatest tape but the editing and mastering job by Siréne is handled very well and it's possible to enjoy the entire show despite the imperfections.

Artwork, Secure EAC Log and Flac fingerprints included

very good audience recording very much worth the download

This is a very rare, early audience recording that had been amazingly
well preserved, considering its age. The sound is fairly clear,
though Ian apologizes to the audience at the beginning for the
quality of the sound, stating that the band was using the venue's
sound system rather than their own.

The recording had several small tape drop-outs, which were repaired.
Nothing Is Easy had a small bit of material missing, which was
repaired by splicing in a passage from later in the track. There were
a few places in other tracks where gaps were repaired by editing,
splicing and blending. Fat Man had a repeating thumping noise that
soundind a bit like a noise from a vinyl recording. It wasn't
possible to toally remove the thumps, but they have been
significantly reduced. Originally, the recording was divided into 11
tracks. These were combined into 7 tracks, and the song transitions
were smoothed out and blended in. Finally, the recording was re-
equalized to improve the bass sound and reduce some excessive high
end tone, and the quite heavy hiss was removed. Overall, I think the
end result turned out quite well considering that this is a 35 year
old recording, and I hope everyone enjoys this classic performance.
