Singer-songwriter Sandy Denny was with Fairport Convention from 1968 to 1969.
She returned to the group in 1974 and left at the end of 1975.
Denny died of a traumatic mid-brain haemorrhage in 1978. She was 31.

I went down to the vaults and dug out my 23-year-old tapes of Fairport Convention recorded in September of 1975. These shows took place at The Amazing Grace in Evanston, IL, during the time that Sandy Denny had rejoined the group. From what I
can tell, the previous upload of the early show was taken from a rebroadcast with songs from both shows. Also, my copy is complete. At one point during the earlier version, you can hear the intro of a song that does not follow. My tapes are from SB recordings made at both shows. The quality of the first set is pretty close but
my version of the late show sounds more natural and far less processed. I think you will all think of these as upgrades.

I was at this show, not sure if it was the early or late show. The band was quite buzzed, I shared some of my bottle of wine with Sandy during the show (she asked if there was any ACID in it before she drank some) - quite a thrill for a young man of 18. I remember Dave Pegg tripping on (accidentley) and then stomping on (purposely) a mandolin and commenting that at an earlier time this would have resulted in a breakup of the band. A wonderful, intimate venue, too bad there is nothing like it in this area any longer. (A stunning lineup of one of my all time favorite bands.)

Notes: Many many thanks to the taper (wherever you are) and Mesquite for sharing this gem from his fantastic collection. 1972 is one of my favorite year and this show has pic rant on CwtAE (what a treat)! This cd came to me with 4 tracks with some repeats between cds. I used cdwave & Cool Edit pro (CEP) to split tracks and remove any repeats. No other processing was done.

Comments: Recorded at The Town Hall in Leeds. This one is another amazing find. It's one of the earliest Dark Side shows - the sixth to be exact. This tape captures the entire show, including a lengthy 'Speak To Me' punctuated by members of the crowd calling to each other. You can hear cash register sound effects and a cow mooing as well. Or was that a sheep?

There is a fair amount of hiss, which is not unusual considering the age of this tape. Over 32 years!  The last two tracks of the Dark Side should be called "warped" versions, since there is a ton of warble.  Even Mo Becks would be challenged to work this one out.  It finally lets up a minute or so into One Of These Days.

The original taper copied his source and sent it to a friend, who forwarded it on by his friend to our good friend JCE, who took sterling care of it over the years. He was kind enough to share it with us all. More precisely, the lineage is; Cassette(1 or 2)>Edirol UA-3FX>HDD>CEPro>WAV>SHN.

Show Notes:
The crowd is very quiet, which is not surprising, since we'd be too, if we had the chance to hear one of the first Dark Side performances.

'Money' is a fun listen, especially since the boys don't get the harmony quite right during the opening. There is a small break in the recording during 'Brain Damage'. It's obvious from the sound that the taper was moving around for some reason -- maybe to see the effects? We also suspect he was starting to have battery problems.
This is unfortunate because a good bit of 'Eclipse' suffers from speed issues that would have taken another 32 years to fix! This lingers a little bit into 'One Of These Days' although it is not as bad; it slowly resolves itself and is gone by the end of the track.

It's great that the taper captured the break after 'Dark Side' even though it is sometimes muffled, probably from hiding the mic. You can hear wind effects, a dog howling, and the boys tweaking their instruments in between. This is rare for an early 1972 recording.

During 'Echoes', there is a small break, with no loss of music. The tape includes the entire band break with audience applause after 'Echoes'. Seamless.

Beginning in March 1972, and continuing for about a year, the band performed an upwards of 70-minute-long version of the album.
The performance grew in length from 60 minutes in March to about 70 minutes later.
Side one of the official album was expanded in concert to about 45 minutes in length with the inclusion of flute, bass and organ, and other instrumental interludes, as well as the instrumentals "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Bouree".
At the conclusion of side one a 5-minute "news and weather" comedy routine gave the band (and the audience) a break from the intense music.
At concerts in Germany and Italy, the news and weather section was done in those native languages.
After the "news and weather" side two of the album was played.
It began as the official album did but then became much more improvisatory and included a long drum solo (sometimes almost 10 minutes long).
The side two section lasted about 25 minutes and concluded, as did the official album, with the coda.
The remainder of the 1972 live show consisted of (with only minor variances throughout the year) "Cross-Eyed Mary", "A New Day Yesterday", "Aqualung", "Wind-Up", "Martin's Guitar Solo", "Locomotive Breath", and "Wind-Up (Reprise)".
There are no known official video or film recordings of the tour and Ian Anderson denies the existence of any soundboard recordings of any of those performances.

I received these files from a collector friend in the last couple of days. It sounds to me like Animals has been taken from an improved copy of the source used for the earlier 'Extraction Tapes' vinyl release. Sources appear to have been speed corrected.

Unfortunately I don't have artwork, other than that I've found on the web and embedded into the FLACs.

Sound is way better than the vinyl transfers I've heard. All in all an amazing release.
